Seskuioksida

Seskuioksida adalah senyawa oksida suatu unsur (atau radikal), dengan rasio antara jumlah atom unsur tersebut dan jumlah atom oksigen adalah 2:3. Misalnya, boron trioksida B2O3 dan fosforus trioksida P4O6 merupakan seskuioksida. Banyak seskuioksida mengandung logam dengan bilangan oksidasi +3 dan ion oksida O2−, misalnya aluminium(III) oksida Al2O3, lantanum(III) oksida La2O3, dan besi(III) oksida Fe2O3. Seskuioksida besi dan aluminium ditemukan di dalam tanah. Seskuioksida logam alkali merupakan pengecualian karena mengandung ion peroksida O2−2 dan superoksida O−2, misalnya, rubidium seskuioksida Rb4O6 diformulasikan sebagai (Rb+)4(O2−2)(O−2)2.[1] Seskuioksida metaloid dan nonlogam lebih baik diformulasikan sebagai senyawa kovalen, misalnya boron trioksida B2O3, dinitrogen trioksida N2O3 dan arsen trioksida As4O6; klorin trioksida Cl2O3 dan bromin trioksida Br2O3 tidak memiliki bilangan oksidasi +3 pada halogennya.

Banyak oksida logam transisi mengkristal dalam jenis struktur korundum, dengan grup ruang R3c. Seskuioksida unsur tanah jarang mengkristal menjadi satu atau lebih dari tiga struktur kristal: heksagonal (jenis A, grup ruang P3m1), monoklinik (jenis B, grup ruang C2/m), atau kubik berpusat badan (tipe C, grup ruang Ia3).[2][3]

Sesquioxidizing, yang berarti pembentukan suatu seskuioksida, adalah kata dengan skor tertinggi yang dapat dimuat di papan Scrabble,[4] meskipun kata ini tidak muncul di kamus resmi Scrabble mana pun.[5] Meskipun Oxford English Dictionary telah mencantumkan kata benda dan kata sifat past participle — sesquioxidation dan sesquioxidized — kata kerja, sesquioxidize, dan bentuk konjugasinya tidak ada dalam kamus yang digunakan sebagai sumber daftar kata Scrabble resmi.
