La pallabra alimaña ye una deformación metastética de la pallabra animalia que ye un plural del vocablu llatín[1] singular animal. Foi usáu polos naturalistes pa englobar a aquelles especies que los sos traces son confusos, raros o difíciles de describir y que col tiempu usóse pa identificar a aquelles especies d'animales perxudiciales, repulsivos o dañibles que conviven col mediu humanu.

Otres derivaciones homofónicas güei yá ensin usu del vocablu Alimaña provién del español antiguu qu'identificaba a Alemaña como Alimaña, quedando rexistrada esta acepción tantu na fonética de préstamu hispanu nel llinguaxe aymará (Bolivia) y nes lliteratures españoles[2] del sieglu XVIII y que nun tienen nenguna rellación cola actual acepción de la pallabra.
