L'Apollo XVII foi unviáu'l 7 d'avientu de 1972 por un cohete Saturnu V, dende la plataforma 39 A del complexu de Cabu Kennedy, na Florida (EEXX). Conocióse oficialmente como AS-512 y foi l'encargáu de llevar los caberos astronautes a la lluna.

La tripulación del Apollo XVII taba compuesta pol comandante Eugene A. Cernan, el pilotu del módulu llunar y xeólogu Dr. Harrison H. Schmitt, llamáu Jack, y el pilotu del módulu de mandu Ronald E. Evans.

Los nomes de les naves, privilexu del comandante, foi Challenger pal módulu llunar y America pal módulu de mandu.

El comandante Gene Cernan foi'l caberu ser humanu que pisó la superficie la Lluna nos Montes Taurus, xunta Cráter Littrow. El 19 d'avientu aterrizaron n'agües del Océanu Pacíficu, poniendo-y fin a la misión.
