Les archaea (o arquées) son microorganismos unicelulares. Al igual que les bacteries, les archaea carecen de nucleu y son por tanto procariontes. D'otra miente, les diferencies a nivel molecular ente arquées y bacteries son tan fundamentales que se-yos clasifica en grupos estremaos. De fechu, estes diferencies son mayores de les qu'hai, por exemplu, ente una planta y un animal. Anguaño considérase que les archaea tan filoxenéticamente más próximes a los eucariontes qu'a les bacteries.

Les archaea foren escubiertes orixinariamente n'ambientes llímite, pero dende entós se-yos tien atopao en too tipu d'hábitats y podríen contribuyir fasta'l 20% de la biomasa.[2] Son particularmente comunes nos océanos y puen ser un de los más abundantes grupos d'organismos nel planeta.[3] Dalgunes especies son hipertermófiles y puen sobrevivir y prosperar a temperatures selemente superiores a los 100 °C y se-yos atopa en xéiseres, fontes hidrotermales y pozos de petroleu.[4] Otres estremófiles s'atopen n'agua hiper-salina, ácida o alcalina. Ensin embargu, otres son mesófiles o psicrófiles y prosperen n'ambientes tales como marismes, agües residuales, agua de mar y nel suelu. A les metanóxenes se-yos pue atopar nel tractu dixestivu d'animales tales como rumiantes, termites y seres humanos. Nun se conocen patóxenos pa los seres humanos,[5][6] anque se tien propuesto dalguna rellación ente los metanóxenos y los trastornos periodontales humanos.[7]

Archaea constitúi un de los dominios nos que se dividen los seres vivos. Tiempu atrás clasificábense como pertenecientes al reinu Monera na taxonomía tradicional de los cinco reinos. En 1990 propúnxose consideralos un dominiu separtáu, según el sistema de tres dominios de Carl Woese.[8][9]
