Un contratu defínese como un alcuerdu llegal que nun se pue francir.
Ye un actu xurídicu priváu, oral o escritu, ente partes que s'obliguen sobre materia o cosa determinada, y que puen ser compelíes pal so cumplimientu. Esti alcuerdu de voluntaes xenera derechos y obligaciones a les partes.
Ye un actu xurídicu bilateral o multillateral, porque intervienen dos o más persones (a diferencia de los actos xurídicos unillaterales en qu'intervién una sola persona), y que tien por finalidá crear derechos y obligaciones (a diferencia d'otros actos xurídicos que tán destinaos a remocicar o estinguir derechos y obligaciones, como les convenciones).
Tamién se denoma contratu'l cartafueyu que recueye les condiciones d'esti actu xurídicu.
