Ghoti

Ghoti ye una grafía o pallabra imaxinaria usada pa ilustrar les irregularidaes fonétiques del inglés.

Carauterístiques

La creación d'esta pallabra ye frecuentemente atribuyida a George Bernard Shaw anque otros estudiosos creen improbable qu'él la anició. Pronúnciase fish, y de fechu atribúyese-y el mesmu significáu, "pez" n'inglés (de camín, les pallabres "pez" y "fish" son cognaos). Dáse-y tal pronunciación poles siguiente causes:

  • "gh", /f/ como en laugh, /læːf, laːf/ (rir);
  • "o", /ɪ/ como en women, /ˈwɪmɪn, ˈwɪmən/ (muyeres); y
  • "ti", /ʃ/ como en nation, /ˈneɪʃən/ (nación).

Otra interpretación pa la so pronunciación ye "..." (esto ye, silenciu) por cuenta de que eses lletres nun tienen soníu en ciertes pallabres del inglés:

  • "gh" como en night (nueche);
  • "o" como en people (xente);
  • "t" como en ballet (la t ye muda nesta pallabra igual qu'en francés);
  • "i" como en business (negociu).

Anque ghoti ye n'ocasiones citada como motivu d'una reforma del idioma inglés, ye como ignorar la importancia de la etimoloxía y la forma d'escribir dichu idioma (otros acoten precisamente dicha esa ortografía como'l motivu pa la reforma). Y ye que'l grafema "gh" nunca representa al fonema /f/ al entamu de la pallabra y "ti" nunca representa /ʃ/ a la fin, de fechu tien de sigui-y otra vocal distintu de "i" por que tenga tal soníu. La pallabra women ye la única n'inglés onde la "o" representa un soníu /ɪ/. Sía comoquier, la pallabra "ghoti" ye un exemplu (el más conocíu) de la citada irregularidá.

  • <gh> pronúnciase como [p] en "hiccough",
  • <ough> como [ou] en dough,
  • <phth> como [t] en "phthisis",
  • <eigh> como [ei] en "neighbour",
  • <tte> como [t] en "gazette" y
  • <eau> como [ou] en "plateau",

entós debería de ser posible escribir la pallabra inglesa "potato" ("pataca" n'español) de la siguiente forma: "ghoughphtheightteeau".
