El términu Maafa derivar de la pallabra suaḥili utilizada para desastre, acontecimientu tarrecible o gran traxedia,[2][3] ente que la espresión holocaustu africanu, derivar d'un términu griegu que significa quema de sacrificiu, siendo preferida por dellos académicos pa enfatizar el calter intencional.

L'usu del términu Maafa pa describir esti periodu de persecución foi popularizáu pola antropologa Marimba Ani nel so llibru publicáu en 1994 Let the Circle Be Unbroken: The Implications of African Spirituality in the Diaspora.[4][5][6][7] Históricamente, la esclavitú d'africanos por persones blanques foi referida como comerciu atlánticu d'esclavos, una espresión que foi criticada por enfatizar los aspeutos comerciales de la persecución africana, calteniendo un puntu de vista acorde cola historiografía europea o blanca norteamericana.
