El magma[1] ye un mestu a alta temperatura (dependiendo de la so composición ya evolución, dende menos de 700 °C hasta más de 1500 °C) de sólidos (cristales y cachos de roca), llíquidu (na so mayoría silicatos) y gas (ricu n'H, O, C, S y Cl), formáu pola fusión parcial o dafecha d'una fonte parental (principalmente, la parte superior del mantu y la bas de la corteya terrestre). Pol so conteníu mineral, el magma pue clasificase en dos grandes grupos: máficos y félsicos. Básicamente, los magmes máficos contienen silicatos ricos en Mg y Ca, demientres que los félsicos contienen silicatos ricos en Na y K.

El magma ascendente que, dende la so xeneración hasta enantes de la so solidificación, xurde na superficie, recibe'l nome de llava.
