Tirffurf afonol yw bala. Gair cyffredin Cymraeg am 'adwy, bwlch' oedd 'bala' gynt. Datlygodd yr ystyr i olygu man lle mae afon yn llifo allan o lyn, ac felly i raddau yn wrthwyneb i aber. Felly mae'r enw lle 'Y Bala' (Gwynedd) yn golygu yn benodol y fan lle rhed afon Dyfrdwy o Lyn Tegid.[1]
Yn ogystal â thref Y Bala yng Ngwynedd, fe'i ceir hefyd yn enwau llefydd megis Baladeulyn yn Nyffryn Nantlle.
