Hanesydd cynnar, mynach a diwinydd o Sais oedd Beda (Saesneg Bede: c. 673 - 735), a aned ger Wearmouth, Durham. Cyfeirir ato'n aml fel "Yr Hybarch Beda" (The Venerable Bede).

Mae ei gyfrol yn yr iaith Ladin Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum yn ffynhonnell bwysig ar gyfer hanes cynnar gwledydd Prydain, er gwaethaf rhagfarn amlwg yr awdur yn erbyn y Brythoniaid. Cafodd ei gyfieithu i Hen Saesneg yn ystod teyrnasiad y brenin Alfred.

Roedd yn ysgolhaig amryddawn hyddysg yn Lladin a Groeg ac yn gyfarwydd â'r Hebraeg. Ymddiddorai hefyd mewn llenyddiaeth glasurol, meddygaeth, seryddiaeth a gramadeg.

Cafodd ei ganoneiddio yn 1899; 27 Mai yw ei ŵyl.
