Math o ddeunydd sydd wedi'i wehyddu neu ei lawbannu o wlân yw brethyn, er y gall hefyd fod wedi'i wneud o gotwm neu ddeunydd arall.[1] Byddai'n cael ei gynhyrchu fel rhan o'r diwydiant gwlân - un o ddiwydiannau pwysicaf Cymru yn ystod y 18g - ac roedd yn cael ei ddefnyddio at nifer fawr o ddibenion, yn cynnwys dillad, blancedi, addurniadau, a glanhau. Gelwid blanced a wnaed o frethyn yn "garthen". Mae gwisgoedd traddodiadol Cymreig hefyd fel arfer wedi'u gwneud o frethyn.

Mae'r term "brethyn cartref" yn cael ei ddefnyddio mewn cyd-destun diwylliannol i gyfeirio at y lleol a'r gwerinol, a hynny yn gadarnhaol.

Mae'r defnydd cynharaf o'r gair "brethyn", wedi'i sillafu uredhyn, yn dod o'r 13g.[1]
