Dinas yn nhalaith Nordrhein-Westfalen yn yr Almaen yw Essen. Saif yn Ardal y Ruhr, ac roedd y boblogaeth yn 2006 yn 583,198.

Sefydlwyd y ddinas yn 845, ond dim ond yn y 19g y tyfodd i fod yn ddinas bwysig. Dinistriwyd canol hanesyddol y ddinas gan fomiau yn ystod yr Ail Ryfel Byd. Mae'n adnabyddus fel canolfan cwmni diwydiannol Friedrich Krupp AG.
