Gabriel yw un o'r saith archangel yn y traddodiad Cristnogol, gyda Mihangel, Raphael, Uriel ac eraill, sy'n sefyll yn dragwyddol o flaen Duw ac yn barod i'w hanfon fel ei negesyddion i'r dynolryw. Fe'i derbynnir hefyd fel un o'r angylion gan Iddewon a Mwslemiaid.
Gabriel yw nawddsant genedigaeth. Yn ogystal fe'i cyfrifir heddiw yn nawddsant teledu a thelegyfathrebu. Gyda Mihangel mae'n warchod drysau eglwysi rhag y Diafol.
Yn y traddodiad Islamaidd mae'n cael ei barchu fel yr angel a anfonwyd gan Dduw i roi'r Coran i'r Proffwyd Mohamed.
