Galaeth droellog cawraidd yw Messier 101 (M101) a welir o'r Ddaear yng nhytser Ursa Major (yr Arth Fawr). Adnabyddir hefyd fel NGC 5457 ar ôl ei rif yn y Catalog Cyffredinol Newydd o glystyrau sêr a gwrthrychau nifylaidd.

Mae M101 yn alaeth ddosbarth Sc, sef galaeth troellog a chanddo chwyddiad canolog cymharol fychan a system breichiau troellog nad ydynt yn dynn. Mae'r breichiau troellog yn dangos yn glir ar luniau recordwyd drwy delesgopau mawr. Mae'n gorwedd tua 16 miliwn blwyddyn goleuni i ffwrdd o'n Cysawd yr Haul ni, ac felly'n gymharol agos i'r Ddaear.

Gwyddys fod gan M101 nifer fawr o ardaloedd HII cawraidd, sef ardaloedd yn y galaeth hwnnw lle mae nifylau hyloyw mawr yn disgleirio mewn canlyniad i ymbelydredd uwchfioled a ryddheir gan sêr anferth oddi fewn iddynt.
