O fewn rheoli data, modelu data yw'r broses o greu model sy'n ymwneud â gwybodaeth mewn modd ffurfiol. Fe'i ceir mewn busnesau a sefydliadau, ac mae'n cynnwys diffinio'r data a dadansoddi'r data er mwyn cefnogi'r busnes neu'r sefydliad. Gwneir y gwaith gan fodelwyr data proffesiynol, sy'n gweithio'n agos gyda rheolwyr a phobl allweddol eraill megis defnyddwyr y systemau gwybodaeth. Ceir 3 math:[1]

  1. modelu-data cysyniadol, astudiaeth o'r anghenion hyd at y gronfa ddata a fwriedir ei defnyddio ac sy'n set o fanylebau annibynnol am y model; fe'i defnydir i drafod yr anghenion gyda staff allweddol y corff.
  2. modelu-data rhesymegol, lle cofnodir strwythurau'r data a ellir eu gweithredu mewn cronfeydd data. Gall gweithredu un modelu-ddata gysyniadol olygu sawl model-ddata rhesymegol.
  3. trawsffurfir y model-ddata rhesymegol yn ddata-model ffisegol, sy'n dosbarthu'r data yn dablau, a lle cymerir i ystyriaeth: mynediad at y gronfa, perfformiad a manylion am storio neu gadw'r gwaith.

Mae 'modelu data' felly'n cynnwys nid yn unig priodweddau'r data, ond hefyd eu strwythurau a'u perthynas rhyngddynt.[2]
