Fe'i ganwyd yn y Bronx, yn fab i Irving Simon a'i wraig Mamie (Levy). Cafodd ei addysg ym Mhrifysgol Efrog Newydd ac ym Mhrifysgol Denver. Ei wragedd oedd Joan Baim (1953–1973), yr actores Marsha Mason (1973–1983), yr actores Diane Lander (1987–1988 a 1990–1998), a'r actores Elaine Joyce (1999–2018).
