Offeryn cerdd chwythbren yw'r obo (lluosog: oboi neu oboau). Mae ffurf fodern yr offeryn, a ddefnyddir mewn cerddorfeydd, wedi'i wneud o bren, ac mae tua 59 cm o hyd. Fe'i chwythir drwy corsen ddwbl.
Dyfeisiwyd yr offeryn tua 1660 yn llys brenhinol Ffrainc, a daeth yn boblogaidd yn fuan mewn gwledydd Ewropeaidd eraill. Daw'r enw o'r gair Ffrangeg hautbois (IPA: /obwɑ/, yn llythrennol "pren uchel"), a drawsnewidiwyd i'r gair Eidaleg oboe (/'ɔ:bɔɛ/ - tair sillaf). Cyn tua 1770 y gair a ddefnyddiwyd yn Lloegr oedd hoboy (/ˈhoʊbɔɪ/); ond dadleolwyd hoboy gan oboe, wedi ei Seisnigeiddio i air deusill (/'oubou/). Daw'r gair Cymraeg "obo" o'r Saesneg.[1]
