Pathogen

Mae pathogen yn asiant heintus, sydd fel arfer yn un o'r germau, ac yn asiant biolegol sy'n achosi clefyd neu afiechyd i'w organeb letyol.[1] Defnyddir y term gan amlaf i gyfeirio at germau sy'n aflonyddu ar anifail neu blanhigyn sy'n organeb amlgellog (er y gall pathogenau heintio organeb ungellog hefyd).

Mae'r term pathogen yn deillio o ddau air croes eu hystyr, bron: y gair Groeg παθογένεια "sy'n achosi dioddefaint" a'r gair γἰγνομαι (γεν-) gignomai (gen-) "geni"), h.y. 'rhoi geni i ddioddefaint'.

Mae gan y corff dynol system imiwnedd sy'n cynnwys bacteria "da" sy'n ddigon cryf i drechu ambell bathogen. ysywaeth, os yw'r system imiwnedd neu'r bacteria da yma'n cael eu niweidio mewn unrhyw fodd (e.e. gan gemotherapi neu HIV neu gwrthfiotigau gall y pathogenau lewyrchu ac amlhau gan niweidio'r organeb letyol neu'r cynhaliwr (h.y. yr anifail neu'r person).

Un pathogen bach (bacteria) o'r enw Yersinia pestis, fwy neu thebyg, a oedd wrth wraidd y Pla Du; a'r firws Variola a'r protosoa Malaria sydd wrth wraidd y rhan fwyaf o farwolaethau y dyddiau hyn. Mae'r HIV wedi effeithio ar filiynau.
