Samwrai
Mae'r gair Siapanaeg Samurai (侍), fel arfer yn cyfeirio at bushi (武士, [bu͍ꜜ.ɕi̥]) neu buke (武家), a oedd yn uchelwyr milwrol canoloesol yn Japan. Yn ôl y cyfieithydd William Scott Wilson: "Yn wreiddiol, mewn Tsieineeg, roedd y symbol 侍 yn golygu "gweithio i" neu "warchod" rhyw berson a dyma'n union ydy 侍う neu "Samwrai". Mae'r gair i'w ganfod am y tro cyntaf mewn casgliad o cerddi o'r enw Kokin Wakashū a ysgrifennwyd rhwng 905 a 914.[1][2]
Erbyn diwedd canrif 12, roedd y gair "samwrai" bron yn golygu bushi, sef y dosbarth uwch o ymladdwyr. Roedd ganddyn nhw reolau caeth o'r enw bushidō. Roedd llai na 10% o boblogaeth Japan yn Samwriaid,[3] ond roedd eu dylanwad yn fawr, a'u hanes yn dal yn fyw heddiw.
