Sbeis
Darnau o blanhigion sydd ddim yn berlysiau ac a ddefnyddir i roi blas ar fwyd yw sbeisys. Yn ôl y diffiniad hwn, nid yw halen yn sbeis, ond mae'r diffiniad llac, yn ôl rhai yn cynnwys mwynau a phopeth arall sy'n rhoi blas ar fwyd.
Yn ystod yr Oesoedd Canol a'r Cyfnod Modern Cynnar roedd sbeisys yn nwyddau mor bwysig ag yw olew heddiw. Ar wahân i roi blas ar fwyd roedden nhw'n cael eu defnyddio i gyffeithio neu gadw bwyd dros amser ac i gynhyrchu moddion. O ganlyniad, roedd y fasnach sbeisys—yn bennaf ar gyfer y rhai a oedd yn dod o Asia—yn bwysig iawn, i'r gwledydd Arabaidd yn y dechrau, wedyn i ddinas-wladwriaethau yr Eidal (e.e. Fenis) ac i'r Ymerodraethau Ewropeaidd. Dechreuodd Oes y Darganfyddiadau yn yr 19g gan chwilio am ffordd ar hyd y môr i'r ynysoedd lle tyfid y sbeisys.
