Haen o awyr yn atmosffer y Ddaear uwchben y troposffer ac islaw'r mesosffer yw'r stratosffer.[1] Mae'n ymestyn o tua 15 km hyd at tua 50 km uwchben y Ddaear. Mae'r stratosffer yn cynnwys 90% o osôn y blaned ac yn chwarae rhan allweddol wrth amddiffyn y Ddaear rhag ymbelydredd uwchfioled yr Haul.[2]

Yn wahanol i'r troposffer islaw, lle mae'r awyr yn oeri wrth ddringo, mae'r stratosffer ar ei boethaf yn yr haenau uchaf. Mae'r graddiant tymheredd hwn yn gyrru system gylchrediad aer o'r enw Cylchrediad Brewer-Dobson. Mae'r cylchrediad yn gyfrifol am symud osôn tuag at y pegynnau.[3]
