Person sy'n cymryd awennau'r llywodraeth yn gyfangwbl i'w ddwylo ei hun, yn enwedig trwy ddulliau anghyfansoddiadol megis coup d'état, ac sy'n rheoli gwlad gyda grym absoliwt yw unben. Gelwir ei lywodraeth yn unbennaeth.

Daw'r gair Cymraeg unben o'r elfennau 'un' + 'pen' (pennaeth, rheolwr). Sylwer, fodd bynnag, fod unben (benywaidd: unbennes) yn air Cymraeg Canol digon parchus, sy'n golygu "teyrn" neu "uchelwr"; ceir sawl enghraifft ohono fel cyfarchiad yn y Pedair Cainc.[1] Y gair cyfatebol yn Saesneg a rhai ieithoedd eraill yw dictator (neu ffurf debyg), o'r gair Lladin dictatus. Tardda o gyfnod y Rhufain Hynafol pan roddwyd grym absoliwt i reolwr, dros dro yn unig, mewn argyfwng gwladol.
