Apicomplexa is een grote en diverse groep eencellige eukaryoten die behoren tot de Alveolata. Vrijwel alle Apicomplexa zijn obligate parasieten, wat betekent dat zij voor hun overleving afhankelijk zijn van een gastheer. De meeste soorten hebben een karakteristiek organel in hun motiele (invasieve) stadium, de apicoplast. Dit is een evolutionair overblijfsel van een plastide.

Apicomplexa kunnen zowel ongewervelde als gewervelde dieren infecteren. Bepaalde soorten Apicomplexa kunnen voor mensen ernstige ziekten veroorzaken zoals malaria (Plasmodium). Er zijn soorten waarmee wordt geëxperimenteerd om insectenpopulaties onder controle te houden. Veel Apicomplexa hebben een ingewikkelde levenscyclus met gespecialiseerde stadia zoals sporozoïeten, merozoïeten en gametocyten. Tijdens de levenscyclus vindt zowel ongeslachtelijke als geslachtelijke voortplanting plaats.
