Codium is een geslacht van groenwieren uit de familie Codiaceae. Er zijn 139 soorten.[1]
Verspreiding
De soorten van dit genus komen wereldwijd verspreid voor in marien milieu.De wieren groeien vooral in de getijdezone maar ook tot op 40 meter waterdiepte. De soorten ontbreken in de arctische en antarctische zeegebieden. De grootste variatie in soorten wordt gevonden in zeegebieden op de overgang tussen gematigd en subtropisch klimaat zoals bij Japan, Zuid-Afrika, Australië, Californië en Mexico.
De meeste soorten komen voor binnen nauw omschreven geografische regio's en vertonen geen grote variatie in verschijningsvorm, daarentegen zijn er een paar soorten, zoals viltwier (C. fragile) die een enorm verspreidingsgebied hebben en ook veel verscheidenheid in verschijningsvorm vertonen.
