Dendropithecus is een monotypisch geslacht van uitgestorven zoogdieren dat voorkwam in het Vroeg- tot Midden-Mioceen.
Naamgeving
Louis Leakey vond in 1948 fossielen op het eiland Rusinga. Wilfrid Le Gros Clark en Leaky benoemden in 1950 de typesoort Limnopithecus macinnesi. De soortaanduiding eert Donald Gordon MacInnes. In 1970 benoemden Peter Andrews en Elwyn Simons het aparte geslacht Dendropithecus, de "boomaap".
Een andere soort is Dendropithecus ugandensis.
Beschrijving
Dit zestig centimeter lange dier had korte armen en een lange staart. Het kon wellicht door de bomen slingeren.
Levenswijze
Deze herbivore aap was een bewoner van dichte bossen. Zijn voedsel bestond uit vruchten, bladeren en bloemen.
Vondsten
Van dit dier werden resten gevonden in Kenia.
Fylogenie
Het werd eens gedacht dat dit dier een voorloper was van de gibbons. Modern onderzoek wijst erop dat het dier te basaal was om een nauwe verwantschap met mensapen aan te nemen.
