Discoba is een diverse clade van eencellige eukaryoten (protisten), waarvan de meeste vertegenwoordigers twee flagellen dragen. Het wordt vaak beschouwd als een supergroep van eukaryoten, en wordt robuust ondersteund door verschillende fylogenetische analyses.[2] Deze clade bevat drie belangrijke groepen: de Euglenozoa, Heterolobosea en Jakobida, evenals de moeilijk te plaatsen soort Tsukubamonas globosa.[3][4]

De meeste groepen zijn vrijlevend en komen voor in zowel zee als zoet water. Binnen de Discoba zijn veel verschillende heterotrofe levenswijzen bekend, van actief jagende tot parasiterende groepen. In de Euglenophyceae (een clade binnen de Euglenozoa) komen zelfs compleet autotrofe vertegenwoordigers voor.

Organismen binnen de Discoba werden voorheen geplaatst in de brede verzamelgroep Excavata, maar deze indeling bleek parafyletisch en wordt daarom niet langer toegepast in moderne eukaryotensystematiek.[5]

Fylogenie

Discoba vormen waarschijnlijk een zeer oude afsplitsing in de evolutie van eukaryoten. De basale groep binnen de Discoba zijn de Jakobida. De onderlinge verwantschappen tussen Discoba en andere excavaten (Metamonada en Malawimonada) zijn nog niet opgehelderd.[6][7]
