Eva Prout (Zanesville, 9 oktober 1894 – Coral Gables,12 november 1980) was een Amerikaanse variétéartieste. Tussen 1911 en 1915 had ze ook een korte carrière in stomme films van Essanay en Kalem.

Biografie

Evebelle Ross Prout werd geboren op 9 oktober 1894 in Zanesville (Ohio) als dochter van Belle Brown en Richard Prout.[1] Het gezin vestigde zich in Columbus (Ohio), waar ze al op jonge leeftijd begon met optreden op het toneel. Ze debuteerde in 1904 in Sol Smith Russells A Poor Relation.[2] De beroemde Amerikaanse journalist en cartoonist James Thurber herinnerde zich haar als zijn klasgenootje op de basisschool in Columbus en onthulde dat hij haar later, in de zomer van 1920, hardnekkig het hof maakte.[3]

Prout maakte haar filmdebuut in 1911, op 17-jarige leeftijd, bij Essanay, een filmproductiebedrijf uit Chicago. Ze had een korte maar intense filmcarrière en maakte tussen 1911 en 1915 drieëndertig korte films, waarvan de laatste twee voor de Kalem Company. Naast rollen als tienermeisje speelde ze ook kinderrollen, wat haar tengere gestalte toeliet. In 1911 wedijverde haar vertolking van Roodkapje met die van Mary Pickford, die nog twee jaar ouder was. Toen ze twintig geworden was trok ze zich terug uit de filmwereld om als zangeres, actrice en danseres in het variété te werken.

Op 30 november 1924 trouwde Prout met Earnest Bailey Geiger, een pianist en haar danspartner in het variété. In 1939 stopten ze met optreden en verhuisden naar Coral Gables in Florida, waar ze in 1946 scheidden.[4] Eva Prout overleed er in november 1980 op 86-jarige leeftijd.[1]
