General Comprehensive Operating System
General Comprehensive Operating System (GCOS) is een familie van besturingssystemen ontwikkeld ten behoeve van mainframes, oorspronkelijk door General Electric met de naam GECOS. Later is dit door Honeywell Bull uitgebreid. Het is nog steeds operationeel voor Bull-mainframes.
Geschiedenis
De GE400-serie werkte met versie 3 en het hiërarchische databasemanagementsysteem Integrated Data Store (IDS1) ingebed in COBOL.[1] De zesbits-tekenset GBCD was toen voldoende om zelfs interactief te werken, zij het slechts met domme terminals.
GBCD
De General Binary Coded Decimal tekenset gebruikte zes bits waarmee 64 tekens konden worden gevormd. De bitstructuur werd in de regel octaal weergegeven.

De versies 7-8 hebben IDS2 (Integrated Data Store) aan boord, een hiërarchisch DBMS dat ASCII-georiënteerd is.[2]
