Intolerance: Love's Struggle Throughout the Ages is een Amerikaanse speelfilm uit 1916 onder regie van D.W. Griffith. De film is gebaseerd op vier schijnbaar historische verhalen over tragische liefde, die melodramatisch en spectaculair worden weergegeven.
Intolerance is deels een reactie van Griffith op de heftige kritiek op het racisme in The Birth of a Nation, maar voornamelijk was het Griffiths antwoord op de filmcensuur. Ten tijde van de première publiceerde hij over dit onderwerp ook een pamflet: The Rise and Fall of Free Speech in America.[1]
Scènes uit de vier verschillende verhalen werden met elkaar afgewisseld, een montagetechniek die het publiek moeilijk bleek te kunnen hanteren. Spectaculair waren de enorme sets voor het Babylonische deel en de aankleding en de massale scènes van het Franse.
De oorspronkelijke film duurde nog langer dan Griffiths voorgaande werk, namelijk meer dan drie uur. Ook toen hij het werk in tweeën gesplitst opnieuw had uitgebracht, onder de titels The fall of Babylon en The Mother and the Law, haalde hij er de enorme kosten van twee miljoen dollar nooit uit.
De film heeft meer invloed gehad op Russische cineasten, zoals Sergej Eisenstein, dan op Griffiths Amerikaanse collega's.
