MP2 (voluit MPEG-1 Audio Layer 2) is een lossy audioformaat met datacompressie. Het formaat is gestandaardiseerd als een van de drie audiocodecs van MPEG-1 en verscheen op 6 december 1991.
Bestanden met dit type audiogegevens hebben de bestandsextensie mp2 of m2a.
MPEG-1 Audio Layer 2 is ontwikkeld door het Nederlandse Philips, het Franse CCETT en het Duitse IRT, als onderdeel van het Europese Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) project. Deze drie bedrijven wonnen in 2000 hiervoor een Emmy Award in de categorie "Technology and Engineering".[1]
Naast DAB-uitzendingen, werd MP2 ook toegepast als audioformaat voor de video-cd (vcd), super video-cd (svcd) en high-definition video (hdv).
