Metaphycus is een geslacht van vliesvleugeligen uit de familie Encyrtidae. De wetenschappelijke naam van dit geslacht is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1917 door Ricardo García Mercet.[1]

Mercet benoemde Metaphycus als een subgenus van Aphycus, met de nieuwe soort Aphycus (Metaphycus) zebratus als typesoort. Deze komt voor in Spanje. In 1925 verhoogde Mercet de status van Metaphycus tot soort.

Metaphycus zijn parasitoïde wespen. Hun gastheren zijn schildluizen en dopluizen (Coccidae). Omdat dit vaak schadelijke insecten zijn in de land- en tuinbouw, is de inzet onderzocht van deze wespen voor de biologische bestrijding ervan. Om de dopluis "black scale" (Saissetia oleae) te bestrijden, een belangrijk plaaginsect in de citrus- en olijventeelt in de Verenigde Staten, werden wespen van de soorten Metaphycus helvolus en Metaphycus lounsburyi, afkomstig uit Zuid-Afrika, geïmporteerd.[2]
