De Michelin Key (Michelin Sleutel) is een internationale onderscheiding voor hotels en andere overnachtingsaccommodaties, toegekend door de Michelingids. De onderscheiding werd in 2024 ingevoerd als tegenhanger voor hotels van de Michelinster voor restaurants. Hotels kunnen een, twee of drie sleutels ontvangen.[1][2]
Geschiedenis
Omstreeks 2018 nam Michelin de Amerikaanse hotel- en boekingswebsite Tablet Hotels over. Tablet Hotels werd hierop deel van de digitalisering en uitbreiding van de reisactiviteiten van Michelin.[3][4]
Eind 2023 begon Michelin met de beoordeling van ongeveer vijfduizend hotels uit de hotelselectie van haar gids voor onderscheidingen.[1] De eerste sleutels werden in 2024 in Frankrijk uitgereikt: van de Franse hotels ontvingen er 127 een sleutel, 38 twee sleutels en 24 drie sleutels.[5] Hierop volgden de Verenigde Staten, waar 80 hotels een sleutel kregen, 33 hotels twee sleutels en elf hotels drie sleutels.[6] Tot begin 2025 werden in totaal vijftien landen de sleutels uitgereikt.[7] Bij de uitreiking van sleutels eind 2025 maakte Michelin in een klap een wereldwijde selectie bekend. Deze omvatte 2.457 hotels op zes continenten: 1.742 hotels met een sleutel, 572 met twee sleutels en 143 met drie sleutels.[8][9] In Nederland ontvingen toen zeventien hotels een Michelin Key. De L'Europe in Amsterdam was het enige Nederlandse en tevens het enige Benelux-hotel met drie sleutels.[10]
Beoordeling
Alleen hotels die in de Michelingids opgenomen zijn, kunnen Michelin-sleutels ontvangen. De Michelin-sleutel staat los van andere nationale hotelclassificaties en ook los van eventuele Michelinsterren van restaurants die zich in betreffende hotels bevinden.[11]
De gehanteerde criteria zijn als volgt:[11][12]
- Architectuur en interieurontwerp;
- Kwaliteit van dienstverlening;
- Eigen karakter van de accommodatie;
- Prijs-kwaliteitsverhouding;
- Integratie van de accommodatie in haar omgeving.
