Molossen
De Molossen (Oudgrieks: Μολοσσοί / Molossoí, Latijn: Molossi) waren een aanzienlijk volk in Epirus.
Eerst alleen in het oosten, aan de bronnen van de Arachthus, ten noordoosten van Dodona gevestigd, breidden zij onder het huis van de Aeaciden hun gezag over heel Epirus uit. De naamheros van dit volk was Molossus, door Pyrrhus, de zoon van Achilles, bij Andromache verwekt.
Hun hoofdstad was eerst Passaron. Later, onder Pyrrhus van Epirus, sedert 294 v.Chr., werd dit Ambracia. Bekend waren de grote Molossische doggen of Molossers.
Het Molossische koningshuis van de Aiakiden heeft veel bekende Epirotische heersers en generaals voortgebracht, met name Pyrrhus van Epirus (r. 306–302 en 297–272 v.Chr.), die een achterneef was van Alexander de Grote en meevocht in onder andere de Diadochenoorlogen en de naar hem vernoemde Pyrrhische Oorlog, waarin hij 'pyrrusoverwinningen' behaalde tegen de Romeinse Republiek.
