Pliopithecus is een geslacht van uitgestorven primaten dat voorkwam in het Midden- tot Laat-Mioceen.
Naamgeving
In 1837 vond Édouard Lartet fossielen van het dier. Henri Marie Ducrotay de Blainville benoemde in 1839 de typesoort Pithecus antiquus. In 1849 benoemde Paul Gervais het aparte geslacht Pliopithecus. De geslachtsnaam betekent vermoedelijk "aap uit het Plioceen" omdat men oorspronkelijk dacht dat de vondsten die ouderdom hadden. Letterlijk betekent het "meer aap".
Beschrijving
Dit 120 centimeter hoge dier had even lange armen als poten. De staart was samengesteld uit tien of meer wervels. Aangezien de oogkassen niet helemaal recht naar voren stonden, had het dier ook geen zuiver stereoscopisch gezichtsveld.
Vondsten
Van dit dier werden resten gevonden in Frankrijk en Tsjechië/Slowakije.
