Polybus

De naam Polybus komt in de Griekse mythologie enkele malen voor, en was ook de naam van een Grieks arts. De naam bestaat uit twee delen: poly- (Oudgrieks πολύ), "veel" en -bus (Oudgrieks βοῦς) "koe, rund". De naam Polybus betekent dus: "hij die vele runderen bezit".

Troje

Polybus was in de Griekse mythologie een Trojaanse strijder die vocht in het beleg bij Troje. Hij was de zoon van Antenor bij Theano. Hij werd gedood door Neoptolemos, de zoon van Achilles en Deidameia. Polybus, of in het oorspronkelijke Oudgrieks Polubos (Πόλυβος), wordt slechts eenmaal vermeld in de Ilias, namelijk in boek elf (boek λ), waarin vele Trojanen zich verzamelen rond de drie aanwezige zonen van Antenor, namelijk Polybos, Agenor en Acamas.

Historie

Polybus (rond 400 v.C.) was in de oud-Griekse historie een arts, schrijver van de eerste verhandeling waarin de theorie naar voren werd gebracht van de humores (de vier lichaamsvochten bloed, slijm, gele en zwarte gal). Volgens Galenus studeerde hij bij Hippocrates en was diens schoonzoon.
