Portable Executable

Een Portable Executable is een bestandsformaat ontwikkeld door Microsoft voor het besturingssysteem Windows. Er staat de informatie in die Windows nodig heeft om programma's in het geheugen te laden en uit te voeren. Het is het formaat voor executables, DLL's, objectcode en stuurprogramma's in 32-bits en 64-bits Windows. Het wordt gebruikt met de extensies .cpl, .exe, .dll, .ocx, .sys, .scr en .drvdat. Het formaat is een aangepaste versie van het Unix-formaat COFF en wordt daarom ook wel PE/COFF genoemd.

Portable Executable mag niet met portable software worden verward.
