Saxophone Colossus is het zesde studioalbum van de Amerikaanse jazzsaxofonist Sonny Rollins. Het is misschien wel Rollins' bekendste album en wordt vaak beschouwd als zijn doorbraak.[1]

De plaat werd in mono opgenomen op 22 juni 1956 met producer Bob Weinstock en geluidstechnicus Rudy Van Gelder in diens Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack (New Jersey). Rollins leidde een kwartet op het album, bestaande uit pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Doug Watkins en drummer Max Roach.

Rollins was ten tijde van de opname lid van het Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet, en de opname vond plaats vier dagen voordat zijn bandleden Brown en Richie Powell omkwamen bij een auto-ongeluk op weg naar een optreden in Chicago (Rollins zat niet in de auto met Brown en Powell). Roach verscheen op verschillende andere soloalbums van Rollins, tot aan het album Freedom Suite uit 1958.

Saxophone Colossus werd uitgebracht door Prestige Records en kreeg lovende kritieken.[bron?] Het droeg bij aan de reputatie van Rollins als een prominent jazzartiest.[bron?]

In 2016 werd Saxophone Colossus door de Library of Congress geselecteerd voor behoud in het National Recording Registry vanwege zijn "culturele, historische of esthetisch significante" karakter.[2]
