Single Document Interface

Een Single Document Interface (SDI) is een gebruikersinterface-paradigma waarbij elk geopend document of bestand in een apart applicatievenster wordt weergegeven, met een eigen menubalk, werkbalk en statusbalk. Bij SDI-applicaties verschijnt elk document als een onafhankelijk item in de taakbalk van het besturingssysteem.

Grafische applicaties die gebruikmaken van aparte vensters met ieder een eigen lint, hebben een Single Document Interface. Dit in tegenstelling tot de Multiple Document Interface (MDI), waarbij meerdere documenten binnen één hoofdvenster worden geopend, en de Tabbed Document Interface (TDI), waarbij documenten als tabbladen binnen één venster worden georganiseerd.

Voorbeelden

Bekende voorbeelden van SDI-applicaties zijn:

  • Notepad - elk tekstbestand opent in een nieuw venster
  • WordPad - elk document krijgt een eigen applicatie-instantie
  • Vroege versies van Microsoft Word (vóór Word 2000)
  • Paint - elke afbeelding opent in een apart venster

Kenmerken

SDI-applicaties worden gekenmerkt door:

  • Elk document heeft een eigen proces of applicatie-instantie
  • Onafhankelijk vensterbeheer via het besturingssysteem
  • Betere ondersteuning voor multi-monitor-configuraties
  • Eenvoudiger implementatie dan MDI
