Smectiet
De mineralengroep smectiet is een groep van meestal gehydrateerde aluminium-fylosilicaten. Smectiet is een van de kleimineralen.

Voorkomen
Samen met de kleimineralen illiet en kaoliniet komt smectiet voor in schalies en andere sedimentaire gesteenten waar klei in voorkomt.
