Tenor
Tenor (uit het Latijn: tenere: vasthouden) is een functionele stem in de muziek. In de vierstemmige muzikale harmonieleer is het de derde stem.
De term tenor wordt dan ook gebruikt voor:
- tenor (zangstem), hoge mannelijke zangstem;
- de 'cantus firmus' (melodiestem) bij een melismatisch organum in de vroege 12e eeuw;
- een lagere (maar niet de laagste) variant van een aantal muziekinstrumenten, zoals:
- De term wordt (met name in Vlaanderen) ook algemeen gebruikt als synoniem voor "hooggeplaatste functionaris" of voor "iemand met grote faam in een bepaald vakgebied".
