Thomas Mathieu (Turnhout, 1991) is een Belgisch arts, hoogleraar en specialist in de fysische geneeskunde en revalidatie en in de sportgeneeskunde. Hij is werkzaam in het AZ Rivierenland en verbonden aan de Universiteit Antwerpen als docent.[1]
Biografie
In 2020 beschreef Mathieu als eerste een scheur van het onderste ligament van de symfyse (pubisligament), een letsel dat chronische liespijn bij sporters kan veroorzaken en dat voordien vaak moeilijk te diagnosticeren was. Dit letsel werd later internationaal bekend als het 'Mathieu-syndroom'.[2][1]
Zijn onderzoek en klinische werk kregen internationale aandacht binnen de sportgeneeskunde. Mathieu ontving onder meer de 'International Sports Medicine Leadership Award' van de American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.[3]
Hij nam tevens deel aan Belgische economische missies in het buitenland als vertegenwoordiger van de Belgische sportgeneeskunde en werd daarbij omschreven als een koninklijk ambassadeur van de discipline.[4][5]
