Copernicus (program)

Copernicus (dawniej: ang. Global Monitoring for Environment and Security, GMES[1]) – program obserwacji Ziemi stanowiący komponent programu kosmicznego Unii Europejskiej. Zarządzany przez Komisję Europejską, jest realizowany we współpracy z państwami członkowskimi, Europejską Agencją Kosmiczną, Europejską Organizacją Eksploatacji Satelitów Meteorologicznych (EUMETSAT), Europejskim Centrum Prognoz Średnioterminowych (ECMWF), agencjami UE i instytutem badawczym Mercator Océan, Europejską Agencją Środowiska i Wspólnym Centrum Badawczym[2][3]). Utworzony został w celu wsparcia działań z zakresu ochrony środowiska, ochrony ludności i bezpieczeństwa.
Program udostępnia dane zebrane przy pomocy sztucznych satelitów oraz za pomocą naziemnych, powietrznych i morskich systemów pomiarowych[2]. Stanowi europejski wkład w budowanie Globalnej Sieci Systemów Obserwacji Ziemi.
Dane satelitarne zbierane są przy pomocy szeregu własnych misji kosmicznych z serii Sentinel, stanowiących osobne satelity lub instrumenty pomiarowe dołączone do innych satelitów, a także przy użyciu innych satelitów np. komercyjnych[4][5][6]. Pierwszy satelita, misja Sentinel 1A, został wystrzelony 3 kwietnia 2014 roku[5].
8 czerwca 2023 roku przy udziale szwedzkiej prezydencji UE świętowano 25 lat programu Copernicus, licząc od deklaracji z Baveno z 1998 roku[7][8].
