Circaetus
Circaetus, shqiponja e gjarprit, është një gjini e shqiponjave të mesme në familjen Accipitridae të zogut të pre. Emri i gjinisë është nga kirkos grekët e lashtë, një lloj haukë dhe aetos, "shqiponja". [1]
Këto janë kryesisht lloje afrikane, por shqiponja e gjarprit me krahë të shkurtër është rritur nga pellgu i Mesdheut në Rusi, Lindjen e Mesme dhe Indi, dhe dimrat në Afrikën subsahariane dhe në lindje të Indonezisë.
Shqiponjat e gjarprit gjenden në habitate të hapura si fushat e kultivuara të savanës së thatë, por kërkojnë pemë në të cilat për të ndërtuar një fole ngjitësish. Veza e vetme inkubohet kryesisht ose tërësisht nga femra.
Shqiponjat e Cirkateve kanë një kokë të rrumbullakosur dhe krahë të gjera. Ata grabitin mbi zvarranikët, kryesisht gjarpërinjtë, por gjithashtu marrin lizards dhe herë pas here gjitarët e vegjël.
