Pacienti

Pacient është çdo marrës i shërbimeve të kujdesit shëndetësor që kryhen nga profesionistë të kujdesit shëndetësor. Pacienti është më shpesh i sëmurë ose i lënduar dhe ka nevojë për trajtim nga një mjek, infermiere, optometrist, dentist, veteriner ose ofrues tjetër të kujdesit shëndetësor.

Etimologji

Fjala pacient fillimisht do të thoshte "ai që vuan". Ky emër në anglisht vjen nga fjala latine patiens, pjesorja e tashme e foljes deponente, patior, që do të thotë 'po vuaj' dhe e ngjashme me foljen greke πάσχειν (paskhein 'vuaj') dhe emri i saj i afërm πάθος (patos).

Kjo gjuhë është interpretuar si kuptimi se roli i pacientëve është të pranojnë dhe tolerojnë në mënyrë pasive vuajtjet dhe trajtimet e përshkruara nga ofruesit e kujdesit shëndetësor, pa u përfshirë në vendimmarrje të përbashkët për kujdesin e tyre.[1]
