Yuga

Një yuga, në hinduizëm, përdoret përgjithësisht për të treguar një moshë kohore.[1]

Në Rigveda, një yuga u referohet brezave, një periudhe kohore (qoftë e gjatë apo e shkurtër), ose një zgjedhë (bashkimi i dy gjërave).[2] Në Mahabharata, fjalët yuga dhe kalpa (një ditë e Brahmës ) përdoren në mënyrë të ndërsjellë për të përshkruar ciklin e krijimit dhe shkatërrimit.

Në tekstet pas-Vedike, fjalët " yuga " dhe "moshë" zakonisht tregojnë një catur-yuga (shqiptohet Çatur Juga ), një cikël prej katër epokash botërore - për shembull, në Surya Siddhanta dhe Bhagavad Gita (pjesë e Mahabharatës ) — përveç nëse kufizohet shprehimisht nga emri i një prej moshave të saj të vogla: Krita (Satya) Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dvapara Yuga ose Kali Yuga .[3] [a]

Etimologjia

Yuga ( sanskritisht: युग ) do të thotë "një zgjedhë " (bashkim i dy gjërave), "breza" ose "një periudhë kohore" si p.sh. një epokë, ku drejtshkrimi i saj arkaik është yug, me forma të tjera si yugam, yugānāṃ, dhe yuge, që rrjedhin nga yuj ( sanskritisht: युज् ; fpf: "të bashkosh ose të vësh nën zgjedhë"), besohet se rrjedh nga *yeug- ( proto-indo-evropiane : fpf. 'për t'u bashkuar').[6]

Në gjuhën latine, juga ose jug përdoret nga fjala jugum, që do të thotë "një zgjedhë që përdoret për të lidhur dy qe" (p.sh. cali-juga = kali-yuga ).[7]
