Компанију су, 1979. године, основали Роберт Меткалф, Хавард Чарни, Брус Борден и Грег Шоу, са седштем у Марлбору, САД. Име 3Com долази од фокуса компније на "Computers, Communication and Compatibility" (рачунари, комуникација и компатибилност).
