FASTA là một giải thuật bắt cặp trình tự được David J. Lipman và William R. Pearson miêu tả lần đầu tiên vào năm 1985 (Rapid and sensitive protein similarity searches).

Ban đầu dùng để so sánh trình tự protein nhưng sau đó nó được cải biến để tìm kiếm cả trình tự DNA.Hiện nay, gói công cụ FASTA chứa tất cả các chương trình cho protein: protein; DNA: DNA; protein: translated DNA (tất cả các khung); DNA: protein và tìm kiếm các peptide.

Ngoài ra, FASTA package cũng cung cấp chương trình SEARCH, một phụ trợ của thuật toán Smith-Waterman algorithm.

Nhiều phần mềm tin sinh học cần dữ liệu trình tự DNA hoặc protein theo kiểu định dạng FASTA như ví dụ minh họa dưới đây.
