BU Persei (BU Per / BD+56 512 / TYC 3694-1247-1)[6] ye una estrella variable na constelación de Perséu. De magnitú aparente media +9,6, ye miembru del cúmulu abiertu NGC 869 y alcuéntrase a una distancia de 1845 pársecs (6000 años lluz) del Sistema Solar.[7]

BU Persei ye una superxigante colorada de tipu espectral M3I con una temperatura efectivo de 3600 K.[8] Tien un radiu 620 vegaes más grande que'l del Sol —comparable al d'Antares (α Scorpii)—, lo qu'equival a 2,9 UA. Si tuviera nel centru del nuesu Sistema Solar, la so superficie estenderíase más allá de la órbita de Marte. Bien lluminosa, la so lluminosidá bolométrica —considerando toles llonxitúes d'onda— ye 28.000 vegaes superior a la lluminosidá solar. Pierde masa en forma de polvu a razón de 2,8 × 10-9 mases solares per añu.[8] La so edá puede cifrase en 19 millones d'años, la edá del cúmulu al que pertenez.[9]

Catalogada como una variable semirregular SRC —que'l so prototipu ye la brillosa μ Cephei—, la fluctuación de rellumu de BU Persei ye de 1,9 magnitúes. Esiste un periodu principal de 367,0 díes[10] —381 ± 10 díes según otru estudiu— y unu secundariu, más llargu ya imprecisu, de 3600 ± 1000 díes.[11]
