Yng Nghyfrifiad 2021 roedd gan ardal adeiledig Colchester boblogaeth o 138,753.[3]
Yn ôl traddodiad, cafodd ei sefydlu gan Cunobelinus (Cynfelyn yn y traddodiad Cymreig) tua'r flwyddyn OC 10. Tyfodd i fod yn un o ddinasoedd pwysicaf y Brydain Rufeinig, sef Camulodunum. Gellir gweld rhannau o'r muriau Rhufeinig o hyd. Mae ganddi gastell Normanaidd yn ogystal.
Cafodd y gwleidydd o Gymraes Helen Mary Jones ei geni yno yn 1960.
