Ardal hanesyddol a dosbarth gweinyddol yw Dir a leolir yn Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pacistan. Ers 1996 mae'r hen ddosbarth wedi cael ei rannu yn ddau, def Dir Uchaf a Dir Isaf. Hyd at y 1960au roedd Dir yn dywysogaeth fechan gyda chryn raddau o annibyniaeth. Dir yw'r brif dref a'r hen brifddinas.

Gorwedd Dir yn rhanbarth hanesyddol Malakand am y ffin ag Affganistan i'r gorllewin, rhwng Chitral i'r gogledd, Swat i'r dwyrain a Mohmand i'r de.

Mae Bwlch Malakand yn cysylltu Dir a Swat. Yn y gogledd ceir Bwlch Lowarai, bwlch uchel dros 10,500 troedfedd sy'n cynnig y brif lwybr i mewn i Chitral.

Yn ddiweddar cipwyd rhan helaeth Dir gan y Taliban Pacistanaidd a'u cynghreiriaid. Gwelodd Dir Isaf ymladd trwm yn Ebrill a Mai 2009, fel rhan o'r hyn a elwir yn Rhyfel Gogledd Orllewin Pakistan, rhwng y llywodraeth ganolog a'r gwrthryfelwyr Islamig, a bu'n rhaid i filoedd lawer o bobl ffoi o'u cartrefi.
